Back in December 2007 a number of enthusiastic individuals began meeting regularly with the objective of developing a series of trails in the Hurunui based on existing parts of rail and road networks, some currently disused, with the intention of creating new trails. The major goal is to establish a network of trails suitable for pedestrians and cyclists covering the Hurunui District from Leithfield to Waiau.
This network will also link in with the Alpine Pacific Triangle Touring Route and Coastal Railway and other districts to facilitate easy access to the area for tourists and visitors (see Cycling in Canterbury, ECan, 2005). It is envisaged that this will have the same social, economic and environmental benefits the Otago Central Rail Trail has given parts of Central Otago, significantly contributing to the economic bonanza the region has experienced recently.
Importantly, there are a number of benefits to the local community in terms of safe cycling and walking routes, encouraging active recreation and combating obesity-related diseases, and greater cohesion within the community. Also, given current environmental issues these trails would allow people to reduce their transport costs and impact on the environment.
The Hurunui Trails Trust became an incorporated society in January 2009. The Trust's vision involves providing a coordinated approach to the development of cycling and walking trails throughout the region to take advantage of the growing interest in these activities for recreation. The region's potential to attract visitors, increase expenditure and length of stay will be greatly enhanced via a well-formed network of trails.
The proposed network of trails and Hurunui reserves would include:
